How to edit a sample in pro tools




















This Mode is incredibly useful for post-production where clips need to be positioned to precise frame locations. Each one changes the behaviour of the Pro Tools Edit window, enabling you to edit your session in different ways.

E ngage Slip mode by clicking on the Slip button or pressing [F2]. This is the simplest of the four modes to understand. With this mode engaged you can make selections, and move the cursor or clips freely. Selecting tools with the Smart Tool engaged Pro Tools will automatically select the Trim, Selector or Grabber tools depending on exactly where the mouse pointer is relative to the clip.

You can now freely select audio from the timeline with the Selector tool. Highlight a region of audio and press [B] to separate it to create a new clip requires AZ mode engaged. Now highlight the new clip with the Grabber tool and move it to a new part of the timeline. Note how you can place it on top of other clips, and you have complete freedom over where it lands.

It is worth pointing out that Pro Tools has both Edit and Timeline selections which can be useful in more advanced workflows. Edit selections are made within the track, whereas Timeline selection are made in the Timeline ruler at the top of the Edit window.

By default these are linked together with the Link Timeline and Edit Selection function. Timeline and Edit selection indicators can both be found in the main time base ruler. However if these are linked you will only see the Timeline indicators. When nudging an edit selection, your selection moves forward or backward within the track without affecting the underlying media in that track. To nudge an Edit selection hold shift and press the plus or minus keys on the numeric keypad.

The timeline selection indicates the area that Pro Tools will playback when you press play. It is especially useful in being able to maintain the same playback range yet audition a completely different area of the track in the Edit selection. The new file is placed at the beginning of the session on an auto-created track. Pro Tools automatically determines if the track needs to be Mono or Stereo. Once you have your audio files imported there is a very good chance you will have to edit the files to make sure they are the correct length. When you purchase sample and loop libraries there is no guarantee the files are perfectly edited, there is a good chance you will have to edit and fine tune the file.

In the example above, the audio file is quite long and has several different drum patterns as well as individual drum samples in it. In order to make sure you use only the part you can use the Trim Tool, which allows you to trip think crop the beginning and end of the file. Select the Trim Tool by clicking on it, or pressing F6 on the keyboard. Once selected, click and drag from the beginning or end of the audio file. Trim from the beginning Trim from the end. Once you have decided on your edit points it's now a decision on how you want to work with your edits.

If your sample is an individual hit, such as a drum hit or sound fx, you might choose to place a copy of the files wherever you might need them throughout your session.

If the sample can be looped, such as a drum loop, you might want edit the length of the loop. The quickest way to create a loop is by using the Trim Loop Tool.
